The Nevada County Department of Public Works, in cooperation with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), is proposing to replace the one lane Hirschdale Road Bridge over the Truckee River (Bridge # 17C0045) and rehabilitate the one lane Hirschdale Road UPRR Overhead (Bridge # 17C0046).

The Hirschdale Road Bridge over the Truckee River, constructed in 1926, spans the Truckee River in an east-west direction with the river flowing in a north to south direction. Hirschdale Road has two travel lanes (total 24 feet) prior to the bridge and narrows to one travel lane (approximately 20 feet wide to the east after the bridge). The existing bridge is a 5-span reinforced concrete girder bridge with concrete piers and abutments. The end spans are approximately 36 feet and 34 feet with the interior spans of 60 feet for a total bridge length of 250 feet long. Caltrans maintenance inspection records show that the bridge is structurally deficient and requires superstructure replacement to address load rating deficiencies. In response to public comment and agency coordination, Nevada County Department of Public Works proposes to replace the bridge with a combination of local and Highway Bridge Program funds for preliminary engineering, environmental, permitting, right-of-way, construction, and construction engineering.

Hirschdale Road Bridge over the Truckee River

The Hirschdale Road UPPR Overhead was constructed in 1926 and spans 2 tracks of the UPRR in an east-west direction. Hirschdale Road is a 20 foot wide one-lane unstriped road at this location. The road ends 1.1 miles past the bridge, with no other public outlets. The existing bridge is a 4-span reinforced concrete girder bridge with concrete piers and abutments. Caltrans maintenance inspection records show that the bridge is functionally obsolete and requires substructure and superstructure rehabilitations to extend its useful life. In response, Nevada County Department of Public Works proposes to seismically retrofit and rehabilitate the bridge with a combination of local and Highway Bridge Program funds for preliminary engineering, environmental, Union Pacific Railroad coordination, construction, and construction engineering.

Hirschdale Road UPRR Overhead

Overview

The two bridges carry Hirschdale Road over the Truckee River and the Union Pacific Railroad tracks approximately 1.2 miles south of Interstate 80. Hirschdale Road provides access to the Truckee River, UPRR, US Forest Service, several private properties and is planned to be an important link in the Nevada County portion of the Tahoe-Pyramid Bike Trail.

Schedule/Status of Project

           July 2016    Contract awarded to Dokken Engineering to begin project.

            Fall 2017    Began project design.
      August 2019    Received environmental approval.
December 2019    Began right-of-way phase.
     August 2023    Project ready for bidding.
  Summer 2025    Begin construction.

  Summer 2027    Complete construction.

Scope of Project

As part of this project the following items will be addressed:

  • Replace Hirschdale Road Bridge over the Truckee River

          -Remove the existing bridge, including foundations.

          -Full bridge replacement.

          -Access will be maintained during construction via a temporary 40-foot-wide trestle installed across                      the Truckee River.

          -Construct stairway access to the river on the east side.

  • Hirschdale Road Overhead

          -Construct in-fill walls at the piers with the face of the infill in line with the pier face.

          -Remove loose concrete and place patches on the piers and abutments.

          -Construct pier cap concrete bolster, with shear key and restrainer cables.

          -Remove bridge barrier, overhang and spalling corbel brackets at joints.

          -Construct new barriers, approach guard rails and fencing (over tracks) on the overhead.

          -Place polyester concrete overlay on bridge deck.

          -Replace all expansion joint seals.
          -Trackwork - Install inside safety guard rails on the existing ties.
